IIT Madras Alumni Association (IITMAA) has officially set up a ‘Mission Million Smiles’ initiative in order to generate a positive influence on one million people's lives in India and others across the world in the next two years.

By achieving the aim of the initiative, IITMAA seeks to carry the energy, resources, and commitment of the IIT Madras Alumni.
IITMAA has introduced a crucial initiative, the ‘Mission 5000 Ignited Minds’, whose main objective is to get 10% of the alumni as dedicated for the initiatives. IIT Madras Alumni Association has a total of 53,825 members, out of which 22,179 are undergraduates and 31,646 are Postgraduates.
The President of IIT Madras Alumni Association (IITMAA), Krishnan Narayanan, pointed out the primary aim behind the new missions and said that the IITMAA has got the inspiration from PM Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat address in 2020, which highlighted the importance of alumni association to the nation.
He said that there are more than 50,000 alumni, students, and faculty at the IITMAA, who possess the potential knowledge, skills, abilities, and resources to become a significant change agent. It is essential for IITMAA to give back to India, and to the local communities.
He further urged the IITMAA alumni to take the Mission Million Smiles Pledge at the official IITMAA website, iitmaa.org.
The IITMAA’s societal impact initiatives will mainly focus on fields including science, technology and innovation interventions for the nation, guiding students, water and sustainability, and women in STEM.
Shyamala Rajaram, Secretary, IITMAA highlighted the unique features of the new initiatives of IITMAA and said that Community spirit, Thought leadership, and Societal impact are the three pillars of focus for IITMAA.
Further, IITMAA will jointly work with their alumni from around the world to kindle community spirit and deliver the societal impact through the seven chapters in India, and multiple lessons in the United States, Europe, and Singapore.
IITMAA has also planned the following initiatives for the next two years,
- IITMAA has decided to conduct the ‘I For IITM’ event in a blended mode, that would involve over 5,000 alumni from 125 cities across 15 countries in order to celebrate the Foundation Day of IIT Madras.
- “Thought Leaders Council” of IITMAA will focus on bringing 12 distinguished alumni from across the world to an interdisciplinary forum that will recognize some of the STI big-bets for India.
- The IIT Madras faculty will produce short, and engaging lectures on Cutting-edge Research and technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Extra-terrestrial Manufacturing, and Quantum computing, under IITMAA’s “Guru Talks” and “Engineering Simplified” series.
- This year, the flagship event, Sangam, will be themed on ‘Restoring Balance – Women in Leadership and STEM.’ IITMAA will anchor the chapter for Society of Women Engineers in South India, and the institute will champion the causes of Inspiring a girl-child and women-students in STEM, and Women in leadership and entrepreneurship.
- This year, IITMAA will Implement the ‘Impact4Bharat’ alumni engagement model for the societal impact projects.
