IIT Kharagpur Develops Algorithm to Boost Profits in Indian Manufacturing Sector

IIT Kharagpur research scholars have invented an algorithm to boost profit in the manufacturing sector which has been approved by Tata Metaliks.

Indian Institute of Technology IIT, Kharagpur research scholars have invented a data driven predictive maintenance module which was further tested and approved by Tata Metaliks to give the green light for usage.

The algorithm is said to save productivity, downtime, cost and manpower of a manufacturing project.

How does the Algorithm Work?

Tata Metaliks used the algorithm on a gearbox of annealing furnace where the algorithm was tested to predict the impending failures, threshold flags for anomaly detection and tracking health state of the industrial assets. It also managed to cluster operating modules of the gearbox and outlines and recognized new operating modules.

The experts assume that the algorithm can save the predictive maintenance cost if used at optimum level. The performance itself revealed that it can save upto INR 1 crore of annual cost with the direct decrease of:

  • Annual downtime by 40 hours
  • Annual manpower requirement by 400 hours and
  • Cost by INR 8 Lakh

How did IIT researchers develop the Algorithm?

The research scholars from the Centre of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies were set to develop generic diagnostic and prognostic algorithms which can adapt and configure themselves to deploy effective predictive maintenance on a large scale.

The research scholars constituted a team led by Prof Akhilesh Kumar, Associate Professor, Dept. of Industrial Systems Engineering.

Algorithm Licensing Rights at IIT Kharagpur with Tata Sons

Tata Sons and IIT Kharagpur jointly hold the licensing rights for this algorithm. The officials of the research team firmly believe that the initiative will receive a massive welcome in the industry as a data driven paradigm.

Whereas, Mohit Kale, General Manager from Tata Metaliks commented that the algorithm has the tendency to Proof-of-Concept to embrace IoT based applications in the era of 4th Industrial revolution.

Algorithm Seems at core of an Atma Nirbhar Bharat

Prof. Virendra K Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur, said as a part of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies set by Dept. of Heavy Industries, Govt. of India and a consortium of six industries it is their responsibility to work and live upto the expectations.

As India is determined to become self-dependent, the initiative is to be taken by the researchers and the industries to fill up their gaps and innovate the old concepts with the help of technology.

The collaboration of both the parties will not only improve the commercialization of project but will also transform aspiring scholars to be a part of the system.

Further, this is another significant milestone to deliver Industrial IoT innovations to India's manufacturing sector thus graduating it to Industry 4.0. The industrial collaborations make it w
