Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur researchers have developed an Artificial Intelligence, AI-based system for automatic inspection of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur’s newly developed portable AI device aims to benefit MSMEs that rely on manual inspection. Oftentimes, an entire batch is rejected if a few samples are found faulty that incur significant losses.
The AI-based portable system will take pictures of all the products set up on a batch of goods. After that, the system will send the feed to the AI-based software for quality control. In that way, the whole batch has not to be manually reopened if any faulty sample is detected.

The research team at IIT Kharagpur includes Professors Surjya K Pal and Professor Debashish Chakravarty, and Pravanjan Nayak, a technical staff who developed the new AI-based portable system for automatic inspection.
Additionally, Ayan Banerjee, a student at Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC) West Bengal has joined the team of researchers as an intern.
IIT Kharagpur researchers have even filed a license for the newly developed AI-based system that will be made available to the technology for MSMEs.
Professor Pal, Head of Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology, IIT Kharagpur stated that the newly developed Ai-based system can inspect every product at a minimal cost.
He further added, “Automation is one of the key aspects of digitalization and also the need of the hour."

MSMEs function in a way that is strenuous wherein a few samples are selected randomly for manual inspection. Based on this, an entire batch is either accepted or rejected.
Sometimes the whole batch is rejected with less than a few samples being faulty. Thus, this manual inspection lacks effectiveness and increases the cost of production.
Professor Pal said that the MSME sector employs over 10 crore people across India. They contribute nearly 30% of India's GDP and 50% of export revenue.
However, MSMEs are still outside the scope of industry-scale adoption of Ai-based systems, intelligence, and machine learning, Professor Pal added.
