The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has notified that the institute is conducting a free online course on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) through the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) platform.
The online course offered at IIT Kanpur will be called the Design of fixed-wing UAV, which is an eight-week course and is completely free of cost. The online programme started on August 23, 2021, which will continue till October 15, 2021.
The online course is suitable for the undergraduate and postgraduate students who have a basic knowledge of aerodynamics. Students willing to receive the certificates for the online course must pay INR 1000 and appear for an examination scheduled to be held on October 24, 2021. However, the appearing students will only receive e-certificates and no hard copies will be issued by the IIT Kanpur.
Dr Subrahmanyam Saderla, a BTech in aeronautical engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad in 2008, MTech and PhD in aerospace engineering from IIT Kanpur during 2010 and 2015, will conduct the online classes.
What can Students Learn During the Course?
- Introduction to fixed-wing UAVs, design, and basic design parameters.
- Feasible design parameters, and configuration layout: Airfoil selection, configuration layout: Planform geometry selection.
- Weight and CG estimation, analytical parameter estimation, and analytical parameter estimation.
- Design Algorithm: Case study, and design algorithm: mission requirements.
- Performance and stability analysis, simulation and detailed sizing.
- Estimation of inertial properties using 3D modelling, and prototype fabrication.
- Wind tunnel testing, and aerodynamic characterisation through wind tunnel testing.
