IIT Kanpur: New Department Launched for Cognitive Science; Check Details Here


Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur has recently launched a new department for Cognitive Science on December 10, 2020. Cognitive science is a complex field of study which involves the study of the mind and its processes.

IIT Kanpur said that the newly created department will research topics like perception, action, consciousness, decision making, language processing, robotics, social cognition and reasoning, and many others.

The Director of IIT Kanpur, Abhay Karandikar said, “The pioneering step of establishing a separate department for Cognitive Science is expected to provide impetus to the research and teaching programs in Cognitive Science at IIT Kanpur.” 

Many IITs have introduced new courses and centers in their academic profiles in the last few months. This includes new centers in IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur and new courses at IIT Hyderabad and IIT Delhi

IIT Kanpur said in a statement that the institute will be the first among IITs to introduce a new department for research on the human mind. The institute launched its first cognitive science programme in 2017 as an interdisciplinary programme (IDP).

IIT Kanpur stated that students at the Department of Cognitive Science will be prepared for diverse fields. These include areas like government intelligence, healthcare, human performance, artificial intelligence, business, data analysis, information processing, law, marketing, product design, and software design.

In addition to the Department of Cognitive Science, IIT Kanpur has also recently launched a Department for Sustainable Energy. The Institute aims to contribute to India’s development as a major player in the field of sustainable energy.

During the Paris agreement, India had pledged to secure 40% of the country’s power requirement from renewable sources by 2030. As a result, this development from IIT Kanpur comes at a very opportune time.
