December 07, 2020: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur Board of Governors has approved the institute’s newly established Sustainable Energy Engineering department to create an impact in a variety of sectors in India like transportation and electricity
Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur stated that the sustainable energy engineering department’s aim is to contribute to India’s bid in becoming a global leader in sustainable energy technologies adoption across the world.
Indian Government has pledged in the Paris agreement to source a minimum of 40% of the country’s energy requirement from clean and renewable energy sources by 2030. As a result, IIT Kanpur’s sustainable energy initiative has come at an opportune time.

IIT Kanpur Sustainable Energy Engineering Department: Academic Programs
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur’s new sustainable energy engineering department will provide multiple skill-sets to its students. IIT K is the first amongst all IITs across India to launch a sustainable energy initiative.
The new courses will be relevant from core engineering disciplines blended with sciences and humanities. The curriculum will be designed in a way to train students to become well-rounded energy engineers.

As a result, they will become assets for the sustainable energy industry along with academia and research organizations.
Professor Karandikar informed that IIT Kanpur’s newly established department’s research will be classified under four major verticals such as:
- Energy capture and generation
- Energy storage and distribution
- Alternative fuels as well as energy
- Environment and policy

Furthermore, the new sustainable energy engineering department of IIT Kanpur will emphasize research outcomes translations into indigenous technology development, prototyping, and commercialization.
However, this research outcomes translation will be in alignment with flagship programs of the Indian Government such as Skill India, Make in India, Atmanirbhar Barat, and Swachh Bharat.
IIT Kanpur’ Board of Governor’s Chairman K Radhakrishnan, Chairman stated that an academic department in the sustainable energy area is an imperative initiative.
This initiative will serve India’s need for educational and technology development, he further added. The US-Based Mehta Family Foundation has supported the newly established department at IIT Kanpur.
