Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad and National Institute for Material Science (NIMS), Japan launched a Joint Research Centre today to achieve sustainable research results in the field of material sciences.
Last year, IIT Hyderabad and NIMS Japan signed an agreement for the International Cooperative Graduate Program (ICGP). The program allowed graduate students pursuing doctorate programs to stay at NIMS, Japan upto one year for research works.
As per the program guidelines issued by the institute, NIMS accepts PhD students from its partner universities to conduct collaborative research studies for 6 months to 1 year. Apart from IIT Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) and Anna University are also the partner universities of NIMS, from India.
Accordingly, for further research and development in the material sciences field, young faculty members of IIT-H will stay at NIMS with their students pursuing PhD Material Science and conduct sustainable collaboration with the scientists of NIMS. Staff of NIMS will co-supervise research work of IIT-H students.
The joint research centre has been launched to perform sustainable research work between both the institutes. The opening of this joint research centre will strengthen ties between the two countries and support the future leaders to achieve the best research results in the material science field.
In the first year, two projects were selected which will contribute to the industrial fields that have strong potential for growth in India. In the future, this centre will contribute to strengthening the Japan-India materials technology network. Currently, scientists from both institutions are preparing for collaboration for research after the COVID-19 pandemic by online scientific information exchange.
This is not the first time that IIT Hyderabad has initiated an international agreement with an overseas institution. In April 2021, IIT-H collaborated with Deakin University for a Joint Doctoral Program.
The Joint Doctoral Program (JDP) invites 10 eligible candidates to spend 3-12 months at Deakin depending on their research subject under joint supervision of both IIT-H and Deakin University. This JDP is scheduled to begin from the July 2021 session.
