IIT Gandhinagar: Registrations Open for 5th Edition of the Online Elective Course on Indian Knowledge Systems; Check Details Here


Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) opens registration for the 5th Edition of its free online elective course, Introduction to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) , themed as ‘The Indian Web of Arts and Aesthetics’. The course will be held from January to April 2021 on the IITGN Youtube channel. Aspirants who were eagerly waiting for this should read the article to know how to apply for the course.

The first lecture will live-stream on January 13, 2021, and subsequent lectures will be held on most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3 PM to 4 PM. All the updates regarding the course will be made available on the website of IIT Gandhinagar.

This IKS course will explore the process and contribution of Indian arts and aesthetics to the Indian Civilization and its cultural integration through the 13 eminent scholars and researchers from India and Overseas including IITGN’s Course Coordinators Professor Michel Danino and Ms. Mana Shah.

This course has its theme derived from the thoughts of how the pan-Indian classical art forms and literature emerged from the convergence of diverse traditional practices of classical folk dialogue or Marga-Deshi as well as from fundamental concepts as seen in Natyashastra which helped in building a theoretical framework.

The first lecture titled ‘Chronicling History: The Indian Way’ will be delivered by Ms. Mana Shah, Lecturer of Sanskrit at IITGN, in which pan-Indian history also known as Charitra or Itihasa of different Indian regions will be discussed. 

Ms. Mana Shah is also a researcher of Sanskrit pedagogy, Manuscriptology, and historical literature in Sanskrit, Prakrit, and medieval languages of Gujarat.

During the course, students will be able to understand the theme in depth through the various sessions such as Professor Michel Danino’s lectures on Mahabharata: India’s first Anthropological project and Pan-Indianness of Ramayana and Professor Lokesh Chandra’s lecture on Buddhism’s Spread in and beyond India.

Other lecture sessions discussing the different Arts and Aesthetics of India will also be a part of this course including lectures by Dr. Padma Subramanyam on Indian Dance and National Unity, Dr. R Nagaswamy’s lecture on Tamil-Sanskrit Interface, Dr. R Ganesh’s Introduction to Indian Poetics, Indian Architecture by Professor VN Prabhakar, and Kerala Performing Arts by Ms. Ankita Nair.

Natyashastra and its Pan Indian Legacy will be discussed during the course along with a lecture on Indian Linguistic Tradition by Professor Kapil Kapoor.

Aesthetics of Poetry and Pleasure by Dr. Shonaleeka Kaul, Indian Music: Classical and Folk Traditions by Professor Srinivas Reddy, a lecture by Dr. Bharat Gupt titled The Practice of Ancient Indian Theatre, as well as Dr. Nanditha Krishna’s lecture on Indian Painting, are some of the other valuable lectures students can access through this online IKS course on IITGN Youtube Channel.
