The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has started a lab facility on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Judiciary at the campus. The inauguration of the lab at IIT-D was done by Justice S Ravindra Bhat of the Supreme Court.
The inauguration event of the lab was also attended virtually by Dr Anil Wali MD FITT, IIT Delhi; Professor Krishna Deva Rao, Vice Chancellor, NLU Delhi and Retd.Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, former Chief Justice of the country.All participants expressed their excitement for taking up data-based research on the judiciary.
Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi also welcomed the use of technology in Judiciary and said that the institute has already built a Centre of Excellence for Law and Technology and will soon sign an MOU with National Law University (NLU), Delhi for research and innovation about comprising courses, innovations, joint projects and start-ups. Both IIT Delhi and NLU will work closely on several aspects regarding Law and Technology, director Rao added.
IIT Delhi issued a statement stating, the start of UJF lab facility on AI for Judiciary is a very positive move for coordination between technology & judicial functioning.
While launching the lab facility at IIT Delhi, Justice S.Ravindra Bhat said," We must establish safeguards around the use of AI for public function and also make sure that human discretion remains wherever it is required & also where important decisions are made. It will ensure that the decision making can be appealed and responsibility determined. The ultimate objective for use of technology is to aid judicial functioning and accessibility and not create further exclusion,” Bhat added.
