IIT Campus to be Set Up in Jamaica, President Kovind Praises the Decision in the Joint Sitting of Parliament of Jamaica

New Delhi: India is planning to establish its first international IIT under its NEP which could be in the Caribbean island country of Jamaica. The policy promotes leading educational universities to open campuses overseas, and Jamaica has expressed interest in hosting an IIT stated President Ram Nath Kovind.

Kovind while addressing the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament of Jamaica on Tuesday said, “Under our National Education Policy released in 2020, India is planning to start new Indian Institutes of Technology abroad and I am happy that Jamaica is one of the first countries to express interest in hosting an IIT here”.

The President emphasised that India supports Jamaica's Vision 2020 and is willing to work with the country and contribute its technological skills, knowledge, and expertise in order to revitalize the country's education and businesses.

“We must get our young minds to work jointly in several fields like Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Jamaican traditional medicine and Ayurveda, and in building together a climate-smart world. We must capture their imagination and energy to build a society that is prosperous, progressive and peaceful," said the President while addressing the state Banquet hosted by the Governor-General of Jamaica.

According to the NEP, the offshore campuses would not only attract international students but also help Indian institutes establish a global reputation. They will also broaden Indian students' knowledge through overseas courses and engagements. Earlier, as part of the India-UAE trade deal, the two nations have agreed to establish an IIT in the UAE.
