IIT Bombay Records a Consistent Increase in IP Rights, 50% Increase in Patent Grants in 2021-22

IIT Bombay Records a Consistent Increase in IP Rights

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has recorded a considerable increase in the Intellectual Property Rights, along with a steady rise of 50% in the patent grants between 2021 and 2022.

Earlier, in 2021-22, IIT Bombay led a total of 131 patents, and 96 of them, or slightly more than 73%, were approved, which represents a significant increase from 2016-2017 (23%). In addition to patents, IIT Bombay has observed a consistent increase in the number of applications for all intellectual property rights (IPRs), including patents, trademarks, designs, and copyright, that are approved.

In the year 2016–17, a total of 27 patents were issued out of 116 applications. Since that, the number of patents granted has only shown an upward curve. However, in FY 2017–18, there were 30 patents issued out of 128 applications.

In FY 2018–19, there were 42 and in FY 2019–20, there were 67.

In 2020–2021, when IIT Bombay filed 164 patent applications and 120 of them were granted, the numbers increased exponentially. Even though IIT Bombay submitted fewer patents—131 in 2021–2022, 96 of which were granted—the institute never had a success rate of more than 73%.

In contrast to the previous several years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of IPR applications from 2020–21, according to the Director's Report from this academic year.

The report states, "Filing of IPR applications for COVID-19 related technology" as one of the major causes for this increase in numbers. A better R&D policy put in place by the institute is suggested by the fact that the annual Director's Report for the previous three years indicates a consistent increase in the success rate of IPR applications being granted.

Number of Patent applications filed, Approved & Success rate in %

Year No. Of. Patents filed  Granted  Success rate in %
2021-22 131 96 73.28
2020-21 164 120 73.1
2019-20 123 67 54.4
2018-19 115 42 36.5
2017-18 128 30 23. 4
2016-17 116 27 23.2

IIT Bombay submitted 189 IPR applications in 2021–2022—including patent, trademark, design, and copyright—and 165 of them—or slightly more than 87 percent—were approved. This was a significant increase from the previous number, which was less than 60%.

Out of the 153 IPR applications submitted in 2019–20, 86, or nearly 56%, were approved. Nonetheless, the overall number of IPR applications filed have increased significantly in the year 2020–21, as it reached 264.

However, only 145 among these were approved, yielding a success rate of about 55%. A large rise in the registration of trademarks and designs were also noted in the report. "Increased trademark registrations might be considered as a sign of potential licensing opportunities for a variety of innovative technologies at the institute”, stated the Director’s Report for 2021.

The institute filed 88 trademark applications, 10 design IPR applications, one copyright application, and other documents in 2020–21. In contrast, only 9 trademarks and 23 design IPR applications were submitted last year.

The report claims that focused efforts were the main reason for this rise. The report stated that, "A new initiative was undertaken to proactively conduct outbound prospecting for technologies protected/filed for protection by the Institute, while proactive efforts were made to assess the possibility of intellectual property for MTech/ Dual degree students to file for possible protection.
