IIT-Bombay Placements to be Challenging as Number of Interest Students Hike by 20%: Read Details Here

IIT-Bombay received a spike of close to 20% for placements this year. In the ongoing pandemic and a slow economy, IIT-Bombay has to deal with the new challenges in the ongoing placement process.

The number of interested students for IIT Bombay placements hovered around 1,700 in the past years.

Although, with the varsity increasing newer programmes, a spillover from last year’s PhD batch, and an increased number of seats due to reservations (EWS), the total number of students applied for placements went up to over 2,100 this year, making the placement process difficult for the institute.

Nearly, 200-300 students generally do not take part in the placement process, despite registering themselves. For instance, 1,784 students who applied for the placements in 2019, only 1,444 participated.

This year too, it is expected that the candidates might drop by 300-odd numbers, but the varsity will still have to place a higher number of students in comparison to the past years.

Furthermore, this year, out of the 2,100 registered, so far 1,810 have made payments and are eligible for the placement process. The numbers are most likely to increase by the end of the second phase.

In the last two years, over 80-85% of the candidates who participated in the process, were placed through the IIT-Bombay Placement cell.

A student mentioned that many from the first batch of newer programs are graduating this year. A representative added, “The total strength of the batch has also gone up due to the reservations and the PhD students from the earlier batch that got delayed this year, due to the pandemic.”

He added that many students also get jobs opportunities outside of campus placements, that may have reduced this year. However, there are no jobs outside this year.

While it might be difficult, the students didn’t lose hope. A student stated, “The companies have become choosy. They are picking fewer numbers after interviews. But the IT/software requirement has gone up and therefore, the institute is hoping to pull it off in the next eight days.”

Additionally, last year, 1,444 students who participated for the placements, 1,207 were placed, of which 159 received international offers. The 2017 and 2018 batches witnessed a successful placement rate of around 73-74%.
