IIT Bombay Records 18% Dip in Placements in the Wake of COVID-19 Pandemic

Trends in total job offers have observed a record low since the past 4 years by at least 18%, in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. This year, 5 jobs were offered to IIT-B students in phase I placement sessions by two PSUs. The number of offers from PSUs also reduced to 5 from 9 since last year.

However, Pre-Placement Offers have witnessed a sudden spike in numbers from 164 of last year to 182.

The Placement Cell responded in this regard, stating, “Comparison (of this year’s statistics) with previous years would not be fair, considering the economic, travel and logistical challenges faced during this pandemic year. The placement office has endeavoured to minimise the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on student recruitment process and has optimised selection outcomes.”

On the other hand, 30 candidates from IIT-Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Delhi have received more than INR 1Cr pay package in the first phase of the placement drive. The top recruiters of IIT-B comprise Sony, Samsung, and Microsoft among others. Additionally, IITs across the nation have ended the placement session virtually this year.
