Around 1,500 PhD and PG students have returned to the IIT- Bombay Pawai campus, as the institute decides to resume regular classes gradually.
IIT Bombay has been cautious and taken all possible measures for reopening amid the pandemic, after the cluster outbreak at IIT Madras. Following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic the college was shut down from March 28, 2020 completely.
Even as IIT Bombay is planning to bring all their students back in a phased manner and announced an early summer vacation on April 1. However, the institute has declared that the autumn and winter semester would be held online keeping in mind students’ safety.
Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay informed that regular classes will be conducted gradually and around 1,500 students have already recorded their presence in the campus.
Most of the students who returned to the campus are PhD scholars, PG students and final-year students, as their research projects depend on laboratory access. The Institute also conducted physical classes for 150 undergraduate students, who are unable to attend online classes.

To ensure the safety of students, they have been asked to attend labs only when it is required and urgent. A roster has been maintained by all the faculty members and mentors to ensure students take turns in the labs. The guidelines and SOPs have been published regarding social distancing measures for both students and faculty.
Students have been asked to use foot-operated taps so that they can wash their hands before entering a common area like the canteen. The hostel canteen operates in shifts to allow limited students at one time. Flexi-glass partitions have also been installed in tables.
