IIT Bombay: The Institute Director Dr. Subhasis Chaudhuri and the officials at IIT-Bombay cancelled the exam held on November 22, after they noticed incidents of cheating.
The sources inform that the examination for ‘mass-transfer’ for students of chemical engineering from IIT Bombay was not invigilated online by the faculty and it was expected from the students to answer by abiding by the institute’s honor code.
A batch of students was divided into two for conducting the exams. While the first batch was under invigilation, the second batch was set free and it was quite prominent that the students were cheating.

A student anonymously reported that the cheating conditions were more fanatical than stated.
On Sunday, the Deputy Director (Academic and Infrastructural Affairs), S. Sudharshan sent an email to all the students repeating the code of honor as well as instructing students to create screen recordings with enabled audio and upload the recordings and the email also stated the end semester exam period.
The semester exams were scheduled online from November 21 to November 28, 2020. An email was also sent to all the faculties highlighting the significance of supervision of examination.
The email sent to the faculty member read, “There has been an incidence of copying in a recent sem exam in a section of a core course that was left unproctored due to an emergency faced by the instructor. The director has, therefore, ordered a re-exam of that section of the course. It is imperative that online exams are not run in a mode that is vulnerable to cheating. The proctored exam guidelines shared with you all must be strictly followed and particularly so for medium to large courses.”

The email also stated that if the faculty members are planning a different method of conducting the exam, then that process must be assessed by the online semester committee. In every examination, a screen recording with sound enabled must be done by all students and earphones must not be used.
If the student takes an examination via mobile phone, then only the Safe App created by the institute should be used otherwise students can easily cheat using Whatsapp, which was added in the aforesaid statement.

The regulations for conducting the examination were sent to the faculty members on October 31. The faculty have pointed out that the insurance of integrity of examinations has been proved to be challenging for all institutions including the IITs. The faculties have been asked to get approved any alternate method for conducting exams, while the students are also requested to convey the information regarding the loopholes.
On November 12, the media reported that a proposal to develop an AI model for automated supervision of IIT Bombay Students has been approved by the institute’s authorities. Currently, the IIT-B students are monitored remotely, where the students need to sit in front of the camera in full view. The AI proctoring would enable automatic identification of cheating cases.
