New Delhi: National Monuments Authority under the Union Ministry of Culture recently appointed IIT-BHU’s Department of Architecture, Planning and Design as one of the expert heritage bodies. The University will offer advice on heritage sites in the northern, central and eastern regions of the country.

The heritage sites covered by the IIT BHU include the ancient cities of Kashi and Ayodhya, Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, archaeological sites at Nalanda Mahavihara, Sanchi Stupa, Sarnath, a few buildings of historic significance in Lucknow and the like.

Professor Pramod Kumar Jain, Director of IIT-BHU, has said the department will act as a consultant on restoration and conservation of heritage sites that are already established as well as for those which will be identified in future.

The department of Architecture was established in 2019, which was the centenary year of the Institution. According to Prof Jain, this is a great achievement for the newest department of IIT-BHU and is likely to provide a big impetus to the growth of the new department.

As one of the Expert Heritage Bodies, the Department of Architecture, IIT-BHU, will have to take part in the framing of Heritage By-laws of centrally protected monuments and sites. They have also been given the responsibility of overseeing matters related to heritage controls like roads and service infrastructure, drainage systems, elevation and facades.
