IISc, University of Melbourne to Offer Joint Ph.D. Program in Science and Technology; Details Here


New Delhi: Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has joined hands with the University of Melbourne to offer the first-ever joint Ph.D. program in Science and Technology to students. The collaboration will include a discussion regarding the intended expansion of the Ph.D. program.

As per IISc, the joint Ph.D. Program in Science and Technology will be open for students as a part of the Melbourne India Postgraduate Academy (MIPA) initiative of the University of Melbourne. The program may be further extended to Medical Ph.D. programs in the near future.

Under the MIPA initiative, joint Ph.D. Program candidates from the University of Melbourne and top Indian institutes will take part in engaging research projects. Furthermore, top researchers will engage in finding solutions to key problems in the field of science and technology. 

Talking about the initiative, Professor Praveen Kumar, Chair, Office of International Relations, IISc, said, “We are excited to partner with the University of Melbourne for our first joint Doctoral program with an international university".

"This partnership will greatly encourage students from both IISc and University of Melbourne to pursue interesting research projects and will give them a unique opportunity to learn from experts at both institutions" he further added.

IISc, University of Melbourne Joint Ph.D. Program 2022: Key Highlights

As per IISc, the joint program, Ph.D. in Science and Technology aims to offer mentorship to students from global experts and a better research environment. The program will provide students with the best facilities and resources on the campus ground for research activities. 

Under this collaboration, both parties will support up to 10 Ph.D. candidates each year for the coming five years. Students who have enrolled in the research program will have the option to complete their education in each institute for up to 12 and up to 24 months. 

Additionally, the joint program is a step towards strengthening the research partnership between IISc and the University of Melbourne, which includes the research work of Professor Udaya Parampalli at the University of Melbourne and Associate Professor Sudhan Majhi from IISc. 

Professor Michael Wesley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) from the University of Melbourne, said, ‘We were delighted to be the first global university partner in a joint Ph.D. program with our colleagues at IISc”.

“Since then, together with the expertise of both institutions, we have been working on developing some significant research and research training projects, and it is our honor to announce the intent to extend the joint program into the fields of medicine also” he added. 

Expressing his gratitude, Professor Praveen Kumar stated that IISc has worked with the University of Melbourne and MIPA in the past on various long-standing academic and research projects and is looking forward to working together in near future as well.
