IISc Decides to Begin Four-Year B.Sc-B-Ed Integrated Course to Produce Quality Science Teachers

New Delhi: IISc Bangalore plans to start a four-year integrated BSc-BEd degree in order to develop excellent teachers for the future. The Integrated Teachers' Education Programme (ITEP) is made possible by the National Education Policy 2020.

The four-year ITEP is designed for all students interested in pursuing a teaching profession. Students will benefit from this integrated course as it allows them to save a year by completing it in four years rather than the five years required by the current BEd plan.

IISc Bangalore Director Govindan Rangarajan described ITEP as a great initiative while addressing the sixth edition of the Visitor's conference on Tuesday. He stated that this programme should be supported by all top educational institutions.

“Without training excellent school teachers the country is not going to move forward as far as science and technology are concerned,” Rangarajan stated. He further stated that by launching such programmes, universities like IISc may offer an example of high-quality teacher training.

The visitor's conference was set to take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 7 and 8. President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the chancellor of IISc, hosted the ceremony and presented the Visitor’s Awards 2020 in the categories of Research and Technological Development.

During the ceremony, the President stated that IISc received a perfect score of 100 on the 'research' criteria, which it shares with eight other world-renowned universities such as Princeton, Harvard, MIT, and Caltech. He congratulated Dr Govindan Rangarajan, the director of IISc, and his team on their accomplishment.

Presentations and discussions on a variety of topics took place during the course of the two-day conference. Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education and Skill Development attended the conference, along with the chairman of AICTE and UGC.
