Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has decided to begin a medical school from the next academic year 2022-23.

IISc Bangalore is renowned for its science and research activity across the country. Now, the institute has announced that it will offer postgraduate medical courses from next year.

During the annual convocation ceremony that was held virtually on Wednesday, the IISc Director Govindan Rangarajan announced that after 100 years of excellence in science and engineering, the institute is all set to begin a postgraduate medical school on campus.

Speaking about the institute’s 100-year long journey, Rangarajan said that that institute began in 1909, offering studies in General Chemistry, following which the department of electrical technology and organic chemistry were quick to gain more attention from the students.

Rangarajan explained that IISc had both science and engineering represented equally right from its genesis, despite the fact that the institute is called the Indian Institute of Science.

Citing the interdisciplinary nature of other IISc Bangalore Courses offered at the prestigious science institution in the country since the last twelve years, Rangarajan said that the institute is planning another change to start a postgraduate medical school on campus.

Earlier in May 2021, the plan to start courses in medical sciences had surfaced as a part of the implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that would uphold the nature of multidisciplinarity to education.

The then Union Minister of Education, Ramesh Pokhriyal chaired a meeting with the official heads of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), IISc Bangalore, and recommended for a multi-disciplinary approach to education according to the NEP 2020.

Further, it was stated that the premiere institutions, IISc and IIT Kharagpur would soon start courses in medical sciences.

IISc Director Govindan Rangarajan spoke about the institute's plan to establish a postgraduate medical school and a research hospital in an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
