IISc Bangalore to Set Up Public Health Centre with Quess Corp


New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore signed an MoU with philanthropist and entrepreneur Ajit Isaac and his wife Sarah Isaac from Quess Corp to establish a Centre for Public Health. The MoU was signed on Thursday, March 17, 2022. 

As per the official statement of IISc Bangalore, the Centre will be operational from 2024. The Centre has been named as Isaac Centre for Public Health. 

IISc Bangalore’s New Centre to Offer Dual Master’s Degrees in Public Health

The Isaac Centre for Public Health will offer dual degree programmes, Master of Public Health-PhD (5-6 years) and Master of Public Health and M.Tech (3 years) to develop research and education in the public health area. 

The aim is to provide students more opportunity to pursue careers in clinical research. This is also to help students develop new treatments and healthcare solutions.

IISc will offer admission to a maximum of 10 students per year in the centre. As per the official release by IISc, the centre will also include state-of-the-art biomedical research computing infrastructure to host data along with developing, testing big data analysis methods, customised to suit the public health requirements.

Quess Corp Donates INR 105 Cr for IISc’s Health Centre

Quess Corp has donated INR 105 crore for the establishment of the Public Health centre. The centre will be located in the IISc Medical School’s Academic and Research Block, spread across 27,000 sq. ft. 

The centre will offer courses in Statistics, Epidemiology and Data Science. IISc Bangalore M.Tech programme is supposed to help students acquire deep domain expertise in Data Science, Public Health Data Analytics, AI and ML techniques. 

Referring to how India is in acute need to have a world-class centre for clinical and academic research in public health, Govindan Rangarajan, Director of IISc Bengaluru, has welcomed this collaboration. 

In particular, the Center will create a niche for health data science and analytics through close collaboration with the existing world-class computer science and data science departments at IISc, putting it on par with international counterparts like the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. We are grateful for such contributions from philanthropic leaders like Mr and Mrs Isaac who make it possible for us to move from aspirations to actually realising our goals”, as stated by the Director. 

The funding will also cover international fellowships and scholarships for the IISc students as well as the visiting chair professors and endowed chair professorships. Additionally, it will also fund research projects in areas such as bio-surveillance, digital health, mobile-based diagnostics, etc. 

Earlier, the institute collaborated with CeNSE (Centre for Nano Science and Engineering) to offer fellowship programs to its second-year M.Tech students. The program will be open for candidates from the academic session 2022-23. 

Meanwhile, IISc Bangalore PG Admission 2022 is open, interested candidates can apply till March 22.
