Researchers at the Centre for Sustainable Technologies, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore have developed a wastewater treatment and recycling system.
IISc, Bangalore researchers claimed that they have developed a wastewater recycling system at Berambadi primary school located in the village of Berambadi in Karnataka.
The institute informed in a press release that a new study was carried out in collaboration with researchers in the UK and published in the Journal of Water Process Engineering.

The study showed how the system has enabled the reuse of wastewater and reduced dependence on freshwater resources over the past decade.
CST, Assistant Professor and a senior author of the paper Lakshminarayana Rao said, "We have demonstrated for the first time that decentralised wastewater treatment systems can be economically put into practice in a rural setting."
IISc Bangalore stated that the researchers were operating the greywater treatment system for over a year.

The IISc Bangalore researchers were monitoring the entry and exit points for the different physicochemical and biological characteristics of the greywater.
The performance of every treatment stage was quantified in the following terms:
- Removal Efficiencies (REs) of turbidity
- Total Suspended Solids (TSS), nitrate, total phosphorus,
- Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)
- Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
- Fecal Coliforms (FC).
Overall, more than 90 percent for most of the parameters, the system showed high REs.
The system launched by IISc researchers saved around 180,000 liters of water annually and about 667 liters of greywater were treated daily using the system.

Author Rao explained how the system works and suggested that this wastewater recycling system could be implemented in both rural and urban settings.
Various factors such as limitations of space, quality of the baseline greywater, and daily flow rates were considered, Rao stated.
Rao also said that the Berambadi people were very happy with the system. Several other schools in Karnataka have approached the IISc to replicate the system in their schools after the success of the sustainable wastewater management project.
