QS World University Rankings 2022: IISc Bangalore Rated “World’s Top Research University”; IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay in Top 200


London-based Quacquarelli Symonds, QS World University Rankings 2022 has awarded the title of “world's top research university” to Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Owing to the top scores in citations per faculty (CPF) metric, IISc becomes the first-ever Indian university to achieve this feat.

In QS World University Rankings 2022 report, which was released on June 08, 2021, the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc) has secured a perfect score of 100 out of 100 in Citations per Faculty (CPF) indicator of the rankings.

With the top score, IISc received the title of “top research university”. Along with IISc, the runner-up institutes like Princeton, Havard, and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have also secured a perfect score of 100/100 for the CPF parameter.

QS World University Rankings 2022: Key Highlights

Among Indian Institutes, IIT Guwahati has achieved a score of 94.8 out of 100 in QS Rankings 2022 parameters, which makes it second to IISc. IIT Guwahati has secured a global rank of 41 as per its CPF score.

*Citations Per Faculty Score

CPF is one of the six parameters which are used to analyze the QS Rankings. The total number of citations received by the university in research papers over the five-year duration is a major factor in analyzing the CPF score of the university.

IIT Roorkee secured the third rankings with a CPF score of 88.8 percentage and overall global rankings of 62. In the overall rankings, IIT Bombay, IISc and IIT Delhi have made it to the top 200 rankings.

Commenting on the rankings, Ben Sowter, Director of Research at QS stated that in QS Ranking 2022 Report, Indian Institutes are doing excellent work in improving their research footprint, which results in a positive result in their overall global image.

Referring to the rankings, the QS statement reads, “According to the Citations Per Faculty (CPF) indicator, when universities are adjusted for faculty size (the size of the institution is taken into account for calculating the CPF), IISc Bangalore is the world’s top research university, achieving a perfect score of 100/100 for this metric”.

Ashwin Fernandes, Regional Director for QS Intelligence Unit in Middle East, North Africa & South Asia stated that this is the first time that any Indian Institute has achieved a perfect score of 100 in any of the parameters of QS Rankings.
