The robotic laboratory of IISc Bangalore will also include the construction of next-generation networks and AI applications for tackling relevant societal problems. The university will provide its expertise in algorithms, drones, and robotic systems, as well as professors and other resources.

As per the official statement, “Nokia will share its expertise in next-generation network innovations and leverage Nokia Bell Labs’ technical expertise in robot orchestration, robot network controller and human-robot interaction to aid the research and development of the end-to-end use case technology solutions”.

Students in this project will employ drones to remotely monitor agricultural orchards in order to increase water conservation and reduce human interaction with pesticides. They will also test drones that will use a 5G-enabled wide-area network to acquire situational information, allowing first responders to save lives by swiftly visiting disaster-affected regions.

The use of drones for purposes such as predicting agricultural fires will also be made. Nokia will finance the CoE for three consecutive years in order to continue the initial phase of the relationship between Nokia and IISc Bangalore.

IISc Bangalore Director Govindan Rangarajan said, “Next-generation communication technologies like 5G and 6G will contribute enormously to the growth of India’s economy. Our collaboration with a world-class company like Nokia will enable us to explore new frontiers for advanced technology research to benefit society as well as provide state-of-the-art training to our students to enable them to become technology leaders in the coming decades”.
