New Delhi: IIM Shillong has conducted a discussion on drug abuse and its consequences with the director of general police (DGP), LR Bishnoi in Meghalaya on October 11, 2022.
The two-hour special session organised by IIM Shillong— Drug Abuse-A Deadly Menace — addressed by Meghalaya DGP L.R. Bishnoi comes amid the ongoing war on drugs in the Northeast. It was also one of the key issues discussed during Union home minister Amit Shah’s recent three-day visit to Assam.
During the discussion, Bishnoi spoke to the students about the difficulties that come with drug misuse and how the Meghalaya Police are handling the problem. He urged all there to work with the police and the government to stop the problem.
He continued saying that Meghalaya is particularly sensitive to the scourge of drug usage due to the cheap availability of drugs being near the golden triangle, an opium-producing area of south-east Asia, containing portions of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.
He added that Meghalaya's government has already taken action to combat drug misuse via the Meghalaya Drug Abuse Prevention Policy, 2020.
According to Bishnoi, drug misuse is an issue not just in cities but has also spread to Meghalaya's most isolated regions. As a result of which the police authorities are on a mission to bring knowledge about the risks of drug usage to even the most remote areas.
The DGP focused on the main elements of drug misuse and its effects on one's social and personal life in his address.
Praising the Meghalaya Police for taking action in this severe matter, Director of IIM Shillong, DP Goyal, stressed the importance of society and institutions working with the law and said that he's grateful to DGP Bishnoi for taking the time to address such a delicate topic.
Goyal concluded by saying that the government, the police, as well as educational institutions, must now put their primary attention on educating the youth about the risks of drug misuse and its legal ramifications.
