IIM Calcutta to Create Hybrid Classes From Academic Session 2022; Read Full Details Here


As per the latest updates, the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is now all prepared to create hybrid classes for students. With hybrid classes, some students will attend the lectures in person, while others will join the class through live stream mode. 

The proposal for offering hybrid classes for Indian Institute of Management Calcutta students was approved by the digital transformation committee of the institutes. It is expected that the institute will take a year to install the facilities for the same. 

Referring to the initiative, Manish Thakur, dean (new initiatives and external relations) of IIM Calcutta said, “The institute will now follow the due procedure. It could take us a year or so to operationalize the facilities".

Adding to the same, a letter addressed to the previous director (Anju Seth) on February 16, 2021, from Verma, the IT representative from the students’ council reads that the institute doesn’t have the required facilities for hybrid classes yet. 

He added that the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has declared to invest a sum of Rs 45 lakh to Rs 50 lakh for the hybrid class initiative. The facilities for the same will take a year or so to operate in the institute. 

“Institutes are being forced to recall students encountering resource constraints and connectivity issues to campuses so they can attend online classes using the connectivity facilities available at hostels. In such a situation, hybrid classes are emerging as a viable concept,” he said.

Due to the current covid-19 pandemic situation in the country, the physical classes have now been paused in various institutes in India. As a result, various colleges and universities are now relying on digital means to continue the classes. 

The digital concept has become a useful tool in the field of education. With its popularity and benefits, IIM Calcutta has also approved the digital facility on its campus. The hybrid class will require the presence of both teachers and students to the necessary extent

“No one knows when Covid will cease to exist. Since we are staring at an uncertain future, it is prudent to adopt the models that can ensure the continuation of studies effectively”.

“But in a country like India, the Union government is required to invest so that elementary schools or upper primary schools can set up the costly facilities,” IIMC teacher said.

With hybrid classes, students will be offered classes through both online and offline means. Students will take turns to attend the classes in person, while class will be streamed live through digital means. 

Highlighting the facilities of hybrid classes, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur teacher said, “It is suitable for the concept of blended learning, a combination of online and offline teaching being advocated by the UGC”.
