IIM Ahmedabad Alumni Association has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Gujarat High Court seeking the SC/ST/OBC quota reservation in the PhD programme. The programme is also known as Fellow Programme in Management as offered in IIMA.
In order to provide reservation benefits to the marginalized communities in the course, the alumni association has filed the plea and sought the court's advice to the centre and IIM Ahmedabad, the report said.
Earlier, this week, the IIM Alumni Network filed a petition at the global level for the students hailing from OBC, SC, ST, and PwD backgrounds.
The report said that the Alumni association has stated that top IIMs like IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, and IIM Calcutta, have planned to provide reservation to the SC/ST/OBC students. Previously, in the year 1971, the institute introduced the PhD programme without reservation for these communities.
The petition asserted that despite being entirely governed and funded by the Ministry of Education, the institute does not follow the reservation policy and this requires immediate attention.
According to the petition, the alumni association has sought the HC to put a hold on the PhD Admission Process as it is violating the reservation act. Further, the plea suggests instructions to the IIMA to implement the reservation policy.
The petition filed by the association urged the High Court to declare that IIM Ahmedabad is required to follow and apply the Article 15 of the Constitution which allows reservation in educational institutions, the report said.
As per the report, the alumni association has urged the Gujarat HC to announce that the institute must mandatorily follow and impose the Article 15 of the Constitution that permits the educational institutions/ universities to offer reservations.
Similarly in 2018, the association had filed a PIL in the court which stayed non-prosecuted for over a year and only in 2020, the petition was disposed of by the course stating that students can approach the court, if they face any problems regarding the non-reservation policy, the report said.
