November 25, 2020: Haryana Chief Minister has approved the project for setting up of Panchayat libraries under Gram Swaraj Abhiyan across the state. Panchayat libraries are being set up to develop the youth’s interest in the education field and enhance their knowledge.
As discussed in a meeting under the chairmanship of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Panchayat libraries will be established in phases across the villages. The first phase of libraries will be set in villages under Maha Gram Yojana.
Haryana CM also mentioned in the meeting that the Higher Education Department (HED) will be handling the Panchayat Library development project.
HED will be functioning as the nodal department and will review and update the project's progress on a regular basis.
Moreover, the Chief Minister has directed concerned officers to ensure the involvement of all Panchayat Members during the establishment of libraries across Haryana villages.
He further asked to involve either a retired officer from Defense belonging from the respective village or an official associated with education sector in the new Gram Swaraj Abhiyan Panchayat Library project.

The School Education Department and Higher Education Department, during the meeting, presented the information related to currently operating libraries in various schools and colleges in Haryana state.
The Higher Education Department (HED) has been functioning the libraries in public places in about 20 districts. Libraries in these 20 districts have been digitized with the provisions of e-books.
Additionally, for the benefit of students with difficulties, libraries have been facilitated with books in Braille script.
Haryana CM further stated, “In addition survey of libraries under the School Education Department, Higher Education Department or other departments, private institutions or libraries being run individually, should be conducted.”
