Gujarat School Admission Age Limit Raised to 6 Years for Class 1 from 2023-24 Session


Gujarat school admission age limit has been raised to 6 years for admission to Class 1 from 2023-24 academic year. Latest reports suggest, Gujarat state government has approved the eligibility criteria for Class 1 admission.

A statement issued by the Director of Primary Education, Government of Gujarat, reads, “From 2023-24 onwards, it would be compulsory for a child to have completed six years of age, as on 1st June”. However, the rule is applicable for primary schools affiliated to Gujarat State Board only.

GSEB Criteria to Even up with Other Boards

Speaking on the new eligibility criteria for Class 1 admission, the Gujarat state government said, the decision was made to be at par with other boards in the state for Nursery Admissions.

In 2012, the state government allowed Class 1 admissions from 5 years of age and onwards. This rule was applied under the Right to Education Act. However, it was CBSE and others that limited the age till 6 years for Class 1.

This disparity largely added to the inconveniences of parents who wished to switch boards for their wards. In order to resolve this issue, the government has raised the age limit to 6 years. 

Director Primary Education Confirms New Admission Rules

The Director of Primary Education from the office Education Department, Gujarat, confirmed the news regarding Class 1 admission criteria raised to a limit of 6 years. 

An official notice was issued on December 23, 2020, for all primary school officials, education committees, education officers at district-level, along with administrative officers of municipal corporations for the revised regulations. 

They have been advised to convey the right information to parents and schools to avoid confusion in the near future.
