Foreign Secretary Inaugurates 3 Schools in Nepal's Gorkha District Under Indian Assistance


Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has inaugurated 3 schools in Nepal’s Gorkha district, the epicenter of the 2015 earthquake, which was built under Indian assistance.

Nepal was rocked by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 which had killed over 9,000 people and over 22,000 people were wounded.

The Twitter handle of the Indian embassy tweeted, "FS@harshvshringl inaugurated three schools in Gorkha completed under India’s reconstruction assistance: investing in people and investing in education."

The video of the school inauguration event was tweeted by the Twitter handle of the foreign secretary.

A Buddhist monastery has also been renovated under the assistance of India and the foreign secretary has inaugurated it too.

The Indian embassy also tweeted regarding this stating, "FS@harshvshringla inaugurated the renovated Tashop (Tare) Gompa Monastery in the Manang district, that was done with Indian assistance and that exemplifies India-Nepal development and cultural cooperation."

India and Nepal are connected by an important thread called Buddhism. Shringla also said that India has cooperated with Nepal in the restoration of 30 heritage locations after the 2015 earthquake.

Some of the restorations include the iconic Seto Machindranath temple in Kathmandu, the Hiranyavarna Mahavihar at Patan, and the Jangam Matha at Bhaktapur.

The foreign secretary stated that their endeavors will protect and celebrate the past and also build and nurture the future. 

In a country with a smaller population such as Nepal and India, education is an important bridge, Shringla added.

With the support of India, Nepal is planning to bring Seventy schools and 150 health facilities which promote learning and health for the well-being of citizens, Shringla stated.

The Indian Embassy in Nepal had informed them that they will rebuild 56 higher secondary schools in Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Kavrepalanchowk, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchok districts in June 2020.

The rebuilding of the schools is a part of the Indian government’s post-earthquake reconstruction works in Nepal with a grant of around INR 184 crore.

Shringla informed at the AIDIA event that the Indian earthquake-related assistance cost USD 1 billion.

He also mentioned that the true value lies in how India has helped communities on the ground. In Gorkha and Nuwakot districts 46,000 houses have been built.

Shringla stated, "They incorporate earthquake-resilient technologies in line with your motto of ‘Build Back Better'."
