Education Ministry Plans to Set-up a University For Language Promotion; Check Details Here


Education Ministry of India is planning to set-up a Bhartiya Bhasha Vishwavidyalaya (BBV) with the purpose of language promotion. The ministry order, released on November 27, also said that a high-level panel will be constituted to create a blueprint and a future roadmap for the establishment of the same.

The panel will have 11 members and will be led by the former chief election commissioner, Mr. N Gopalaswami. The panel will also have several eminent personalities that will work on the outlines for the new institutes.

Under the plan, two new institutes namely, Bhartiya Bhasha Vishwavidyalaya (BBV) and the Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation (IITI) will be set up. The 11 member panel will be responsible for the governance structure and assignment of centers and departments that would work under them.

The committee will also be responsible for the financial requirements associated with the running of the institutes. Other than this, they will also be required to intimate the ministry if any other land or capital requirements are needed. 

Another thing that was on the agenda was the incorporation of the functioning of the Center of Excellence for studies of classical languages in the newly set up institutes. The decision to set up such institutes is a part of the initiative under National Education Policy.

Apart from Mr. Gopalswami, many other eminent people are also on the panel. These include Prof Chand Kiran Saluja of Sanskrit Promotion Foundation, New Delhi, UGC chief D P Singh, Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya vice-chancellor Rajnish Shukla, and Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University vice-chancellor Ramesh Kumar Pandey. 

The new education policy aims to promote Indian languages by introducing courses related to them in various educational institutes. A major part of the policy is dedicated to this sole purpose. 

The education ministry is also making efforts to make provisions to introduce early education in the mother tongue. As per the Union Education Minister, the aim of the new policy is not to discourage English but rather to promote local Indian languages.
