January 11, 2021: Ministry of Education has asked states to conduct a door-to-door survey and identify students within the age group 6 to 18 who are not enrolled in schools across the country.

The Ministry of Education aims to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic amongst hundreds of underprivileged children, especially migrant children. Among a host of measures, the ministry has recommended a relaxation of detention norms for the year.

The motive behind this move is to ensure every migrant child, affected by the pandemic, is identified and enrolled in a school.

This is to ensure there is no disruption in their education. The states have to chart out an action to ensure immediate enrollment into schools for these children.

“The Ministry of Education has prepared and issued detailed guidelines on steps to be taken by the States and UTs during school closure and when the schools reopen,” a senior official from the ministry said.

Government recommended to states and UTs to make education more accessible to migrant children with the help of the following: Classroom on wheels, classes in small groups in villages, provisions of uniforms, textbooks, and mid-day meals, increasing access to digital resources, and using the television and radio to enhance learning.

Additionally, the ministry has also recommended student support to help students adjust to returning to school after its prolonged closure. These recommendations include modules to help schools prepare for the return of the students and bridge courses for a short period of time.

Reducing detention norms and identifying students based on their levels of learning are some of the other recommendations by the ministry.

Encouraging reading habits in children beyond their curriculum, improving comprehension and numeracy skills, encouraging creative participation, and hosting large scale remedial and learning enhancement programs are some of its other suggestions.
