DU Teachers’ Association Holds Protest Against Implementation of New Education Policy; Details Here

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) on Tuesday held a protest against the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP 2020) in the varsity.

The DUTA protested outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office in the Delhi University, where an important Academic Council (AC) meeting was underway, wherein the meeting will determine implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in the university from the next academic year.

In the meeting that was conducted on August 23, the standing committee on academic matters approved the implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 from the next academic year 2022-23, the fourth-year UG programmes and multiple entry/exit options for the students.

However, the committee deferred discussions on the implementation of the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). Moreover, the recommendation of the standing committee is being discussed in the Academic Council meeting.

The DUTA wrote a letter to PC Joshi, the Vice-Chancellor to request that these matters have grave consequences, therefore they must be first discussed at all statutory levels such ad Faculties, Departments, anr Staff Councils before being placed in the Academic Council.

It was mentioned in the letter that wide-spread discussions would enable the varsity to not take hasty decisions towards the NEP 2020 implementation and other regulations. The letter also stated about the disastrous implementation of the FYUP in 2013 and its subsequent withdrawal in 2014 after the widespread protests by all stakeholders.

In the letter the DUTA stated that students rejected the idea of additional expenditure for the fourth year during the implementation of FYUP in 2013. According to the survey done in 2013, it can be noted that students were spending approximately INR 1.5 - 2 lakhs per year by staying in Delhi to pursue undergraduate education, for which the students, later, rejected the idea of FYUP because of the dilution of the first two years of FYUP.

In conclusion, the DUTA wrote that they see the new NEP 2020 model similar to the FYUP that is once again packing the first two semesters with lukewarm courses.
