DU Plans to Set-Up its Third Campus in East Delhi; Read Details Here

Delhi University (DU): As per the reports given by the officials, the University of Delhi may set-up a new campus in the east district of the Nation’s capital as they claim that it will not only reduce the administrative burden on the south and north campuses but will also stimulate higher education opportunities in the region.

Delhi University presently has two campuses - the North campus and the South campus, apart from other affiliated colleges spread across the city.

The DU pro-vice-chancellor PC Joshi, who is also the acting vice-chancellor stated in a press release that they are planning to set up the new campus in the Surajmal Vihar area of East Delhi. He said that they own land in East Delhi and are trying to develop it into campus. They want to have a campus in East Delhi as well.

The officials are going to conduct a meeting on December 09, 2020, to discuss the matter and the University’s high-powered committee has also recently inspected the site. After the meeting, they shall take the matter to the other side of the statutory bodies of the University for their approval.

Delhi University had tweeted recently that Joshi and other senior officials had visited the site on December 05, 2020.

The land that DU is claiming is located near the Karkardooma district courts complex and can be accessed by both Red and Blue Lines of Delhi Metro.

Joshi stated that the administration may set-up departments for liberal arts courses and a law centre at the new campus. He further added that they have made a preliminary plan and have estimated a budget that will cost around INR 600 crore, so they also have to make provisions for the funds.

He said that generally, these things take time but they have already proceeded in that direction. DU Dean of college Balram Pani said that setting up a new campus will not only provide better education opportunities but will also help manage the administrative work.

He stated further that currently there are over 40 colleges managed by North Campus and 24 colleges managed by South Campus, so the set-up of the East campus will provide the colleges located in East and North-East Delhi to work efficiently as they will have their own campus.

The Principal of Shaheed Rajguru College in Vasundhara Enclave expressed his concern saying that they are sending someone to the North Campus for any kind of administrative work almost daily. The students, in case of any grievances, have to travel all way long to North Campus and it becomes further difficult in times of admissions or examinations. He further expressed that it would become much more convenient if they get a campus in Surajmal Vihar.

Many students also suggested that the authorities should initiate opening new colleges. A member of Krantikari Yuva Sangh (KYS) said that if the authorities are planning to have a new campus, then they should also plan about opening new colleges to increase undergraduate seats.

He continued saying that every year, several students, especially from the marginalized sections take admissions in distance courses because of the limited seats in DU.

The former Vice-chancellor of DU, Deepak Pental said that the third campus should be used for either new courses or for the School of Open Learning.
