The students stated that they have secured high marks in the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE 2020) but the university is refusing to provide them admission because of the delayed graduation result by Delhi University

The three candidates who have applied for PG admission at JNU have completed their undergraduate at Delhi University in English Hons and Political Science Hons.

Kawalpreet Kaur and Haider Ali represented the petitioners and stated that the petitioners have appeared for the JNU entrance examination and secured higher marks than the marks listed in the first admission list.

On March 3, 2020, JNU had published the admission prospectus which explains the selection procedure in detail. The petitioners’ grievance was related to that clause that preference for admission will be provided to candidates whose qualifying examination results were declared.

The result of the last semester examination conducted at Delhi University was declared on November 20 and 21, 2020 but JNU demanded the candidates to upload the result by November 8, 2020.

The petitioners claimed that they were not considered for admission in JNU even though they have qualified on merit. The counsel of the petitioner contended that preference is given to candidates whose results were released is not fair and it is no fault of the candidates that their results were delayed.

JNU’s counsel responded to the complaints of students and stated that the admission process is still ongoing in JNU and the candidates will be provided admission if there are seats available in the selected course and if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Justice Prateek Jalan accepted the statement issued by the JNU counsel Monika Arora and said that the graduation results of the candidates were released, hence preference will be given to the candidates whose results were released earlier or the availability of the seats should not affect the admission of the petitioners since they are qualified on merit.
