DST Approves 1.1 Billion INR to IIT Ropar to Set up TIH for Agriculture and Water

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India has approved a sum of 1.1 billion INR to set up a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) in the domain of Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub (AWaDH).

AWaDH aims to provide solutions for stubble management, water quality improvement, mapping of hazardous substances in water and soil and their treatment, deploying IoT-based Cyber-Physical System (CPS) technologies in farming fields, and so on. The aim of the hub is to make agriculture a profitable industry.

As part of an agrarian state, IIT Ropar has always focused on research that addresses water-agriculture-related issues. AWaDH will provide a national platform for researchers and technologists to develop technologies and practices which can improve the scenario of the country in the field.

IIT Ropar

The core team of the hub comprises Professor Prabir Sarkar (Stubble Management and Environment), Professor Neeraj Goel (Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture), Professor Neelkanth Nirmalkar (Water Quality Management), Professor Suman Kumar (IoTs and IoEs in Agriculture), Professor L. Vijay Anand (Water and Soil Quality Management), Professor Pushpendra P. Singh (Water/Soil Mapping-Hazardous Substances) and Professor Mukesh Kumar (AI-based farm surveillance).

AWaDH aims to correct the dregs of the green revolution in India: soil degradation and water pollution due to the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides.

IIT Ropar will develop technologies and practices that can improve the yield and minimize the generation of hazardous substances at the same time. To achieve its goal, the team from IIT Ropar will connect actively with the farmers.
