Delhi University has decided to name upcoming colleges and education centres after Sushma Swaraj and Veer Savarkar.

According to the Delhi University reports, the decision to name new colleges after these personalities was taken by the Delhi University Vice-chancellor at the Executive Council meeting of the university.

Further, the proposed changes to the screening and appointment of assistant professors were passed by the council despite dissent by three members, Rajpal Singh Pawar, Seema Das, and advocate Ashok Aggarwal.

Earlier, the proposal to cap the number of candidates for interviews was withdrawn. However there is no cap on the number of candidates for colleges, while a total of 30 candidates for the first vacancy and 10 for an additional vacancy will be called for university departments.

As Ph.D was given weightage for selection of assistant professors, the three members expressed their dissent. As a result, many ad hoc and contractual teachers without PhD will be disadvantaged.

The three dissenting members requested the implementation of the December 5, 2019 letter of the Education Ministry and a one-time regulation for absorption of ad hoc teachers.

As per the ministry's letter, the faculty appointed and working on ad hoc, temporary or contract basis, and fulfilling the eligibility criteria will be shortlisted for interview in the University or its Colleges.

Seema Das said that the Vice-chancellor has stated that the varsity officials will look into the letter. She said that the VC has taken the decision to not just name the upcoming colleges after Veer Savarkar and Sushma Swaraj, but also facilitation centers.

Earlier, the academic council held a meeting in August, where it was decided that the upcoming colleges/ centers will be named after prominent personalities, Sushma Swaraj, Veer Savarkar, Sardar Patel, and Swami Vivekanada.

At the same time, the council suggested the names of other prominent members such as Savitri Bai Phule, Arun Jaitley, Choudhary Brahm Prakash, CD Deshmukh, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The council had authorised the DU Vice-chancellor to finalise the names of these personalities. The council formed to look into the matter of de-affiliation of the College of Art from DU.

The affiliation with the Delhi government-run Ambedkar University told the council that the de-affiliation should be opposed and it shouldn't happen.

As a result, it was decided that another committee consisting of senior university authorities and faculty members will look into the matter, study it in detail, and prepare points to present it before the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor (L-G).

In March 2021, the Delhi Cabinet decided to merge the DU College of Art, which is affiliated to Delhi University (DU), with Ambedkar University.
