Chandigarh Colleges Reopening: Education Department to Discuss Possibilities with College Heads


The education department of Chandigarh will have a discussion with the college heads on the reopening of colleges and a final decision will be taken based on the suggestions from the heads of the Institutes. 

Rubinderjit Singh Brar, the Director of Higher Education stated that the decision is yet to be taken on a few points. The college principals assured that they will follow the instructions. A Government College principal stated that they are waiting for the decision of the education department.

The attendance of the college remains to be low and the students of the first year are looking forward to attending the physical classes. 

On November 18, 2020, the Higher Education Department of Chandigarh permitted the final year students of undergraduate and postgraduate programs to visit the college campus for academic and placement programs from November 23, 2020. 

The hostels were also permitted to be opened from December 1, 2020. But most of the hostels remained closed because of the low attendance percentage in colleges. About 90% of the students preferred online classes over physical classes.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued guidelines that needed to be followed after the reopening of college on November 5, 2020. The important guidelines include social distancing, mandatory face masks, safety rules and health monitoring of the students and staff. 

Some of the colleges in Chandigarh were reopened for the research scholars while most of the colleges conducted online house examinations. 

MCM DAV College has opened the hostel for the second year postgraduate students on January 4, 2021. The hostel was reopened for the 15 students who have returned to the college with their parents’ consent. 

After the winter vacations, the government schools of Chandigarh were reopened on January 4, 2021. The teachers from most schools have reported that the attendance percentage was thin. The terminal examination results will be announced online through WhatsApp or email on January 5, 2021.
