The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will now be permitting students of Class X and XII to appear in the improvement exam within the same year if they wish to do so.
Until previous years students giving CBSE Class X and Class XII Board Exams had to wait to repeat the exams during the next academic session. The compartment exams will be conducted shortly after the Class 10 and 12 Board Exams. Students will be graded on the basis of the best of two.
According to Rule 44.1 of CBSE, students appearing for Class XII Board exams will be given a chance to reappear in the main examination to improve their score in one subject. However, if they wish to reappear for multiple exams, they will have to wait until the next academic session.
Similarly, Rule 44.2 of the CBSE states that a Class X student who has passed the examination can also reappear for improvement if marks. However, he/she can only do so in the following year.
The new option for repeating the exam has been put in place following a decision as per the National Education Policy. However, this will be limited to one subject. The board will now be giving students a chance to improve their marks in case they are unsatisfied.
This announcement has been received well by all students who wish to appear for the exams again to achieve a better score immediately after they have appeared for the first cycle of exams. Class X and XII students are to be given a chance to improve their performance in the Compartment Examination.
The students who appear for the repeat exams and improve their previous marks will receive a mark sheet with the combined results of both exams.
The official notification by CBSE stated, “The students appearing in 2021 examination and if they wish to improve their performance in any one subject they may again apply in the Compartment Examination for appearing to improve their performance.”
In case a student wishes to appear for more than two subjects, he/she will still have to wait until the next academic session to reappear.
