Cabinet Approves Setting Up of Central University in Ladakh; Read Full Report Here


The Central Government has approved the setting up of Central University in Ladakh State, along with the establishment of an integrated multi-purpose infrastructure development corporation in the state. 

With the approval of the central Government, Ladakh Infrastructure Development Corporation will be established to encourage local business, and offer various employment opportunities to the youth in the state. 

The decision to offer approval was taken during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Referring to the approval, the PM informed that the cost of setting up the university will be Rs 750 crore, while for the corporation, a fund of Rs 25 crore will be used.

Adding to the same, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur stated that the Central University will be established with an outlay of about INR 750 crore. The university will be set up in all areas of Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh including Leh and Kargil.

The Ladakh Central University will help in offering higher education to students of Ladakh and reduce the lack of university in the states. The university will further help in improving the education quality, and will offer career opportunities to students, he added.

Talking about the need of the university in Ladakh, Union Minister added that In accordance with the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019, the state had established a Jammu, and a Kashmir Central University for students. However, Ladakh Central University was not included. 

He further added, "The establishment of an integrated multi-purpose infrastructure development corporation for Ladakh will result in the inclusive and integrated development of the UT of Ladakh".

“The impact of the development will be multi-dimensional and it will help in further development of human resources and better utilization thereof. It increases domestic production of goods and services and will facilitate their smooth supply” he added. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah added that the multi corporation will further help in developing local industries, and encourage various businesses in the field of employment, and tourism.
