Dr. Ambedkar Global Law Institute, Tirupati, Professor: Maglin M Raja Interview

Maglin M Raja has been working as a Professor at Dr. Ambedkar Global Law Institute, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. He has done B. A. (Sociology), LLB and LLM as part of his academics. Before joining Ambedkar institute, he worked as a Junior Advocate at District Munsif Court, Uthukkottai, Tamil Nadu from 2012 to 2019. He is also a highly accomplished Lawyer and seasoned Assistant Professor with 3 years of experience teaching undergraduate and graduates in different law subjects. He has 7+ years of experience in case assessment and analysis, strategic planning, negotiations. His major skills are leadership, communication, problem solving and collaborative approach, time management, critical thinking and he can also work under pressurized environment.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

"To look after students academic activities, growth and development"

As a faculty, I am responsible to Instruct all the students to attend their classes regularly and to follow the guidelines received from the college. Also I need to look after the students whether they are focused towards their studies and giving their internal / external exams without fail. 

How do you maintain healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"By creating an ambiance of positivity, friendliness and collaboration"

During classes, I teach my students with full enthusiasm and passion and I ensure that students enjoy reading the subject. Because I believe that to have a cordial relationship with students, you need to provide them a positive environment to learn and grow. And when it comes to my fellow faculty, I maintain the environment of friendliness and collaboration by discussing the student improvement programs and other course improvisation techniques. Overall, I ensure my presence and support as and when required for both of them.

How do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

"By using real life case studies and discussing with students about current affairs"

To enforce an industry oriented and practical approach towards subjects, I use a lot of real life case studies and examples while teaching any concept with my students. I also try to keep them updated with the latest happenings of the outside world by discussing current affairs and judgements to expand their view towards the subject.

Which best practices are offered by your institute to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

"We organise seminars and assign assignments to students regularly"

We conduct events like external seminars where we invite Senior Advocates or Judges to discuss their views and experience on various topics to widen the subject view of students. And exercises are also assigned to them regularly to give them an idea about what they can expect in the real world. Additionally, we encourage them to submit papers or presentations on a particular topic to improve their knowledge.

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

"After rigorous analysis of the students needs and industry demands"

I strongly believe that curriculum is the core of learning establishments and hence it should be drafted and updated very carefully so that it can meet students' needs. Hence we develop our curriculum after analysing our students' requirements (so that they can understand and apply the gathered knowledge out of the classroom) and industry demands. 

What are your views upon the placements and higher education about the students from your department?

"Our full support is always there for students for both the things"

We provide our full support and guidance to students to help them choose their career and higher education scope wisely.

How do you prepare your student to cope up with this competitive world?

"By encouraging them to keep them updated about latest laws and judgements"

We continuously motivate our students to do better in their respective areas, because this helps us to inculcate confidence to face the outside world. We also ask them not to compare themselves with anyone, as everyone is unique and has full potential to live a good life.

Which extracurricular activities are organized in your college to enhance the skills of students?

"Discussion sessions on current affairs, real life projects and assignments are few of them"

We upskill our students by discussing with them information on current affairs. And assignments and projects are also assigned to them so that they can use their existing skills and build new ones. 

What are the challenges you are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?

"We are facing difficulty in bringing delivered education into reality"

Though our teachers desperately teach each chapter with full passion and commitment, they don’t get enough time to make it into effect. We are being institutionalized for the sake of exams and results.

When you came to this college, what was your vision?

"To make our students ready for the real world challenges"

When I joined this institute, my goal was to make every student capable and confident enough so that they can identify and resolve challenges of their career on their own. My next aim was to develop our students into positive change makers of society.

How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practices of industry?

"It adhere to bring an awareness about laws and justice in society"

Being a law college, it is highly recommended to bring in awareness about the different set of laws around us in and out of our country. And our curriculum is exactly adhered to with the recommendation and best practices to enable our students to work as per the industry demands. 

How does your college enhance the skills of faculty and prepare them according to the industry standards?

"Through feedback received from students, seminars and training programs"

We take feedback from students on a regular basis about the faculty, their teaching methodology and communicate the same to the faculty. We also ask faculty to do necessary improvement if any. Seminars or additional coaching are exclusively available for each faculty where they get a chance to interact with a senior Judge or Advocates.

What are the approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?

"I use real life judgements to enhance their knowledge of subjects"

I used to share the real time cases and judgements to enhance their knowledge and also give them individual assignments to improve their knowledge.

"The support and facilities we offer to our students makes us strong"

Our college is very much empathetic about students and we offer all kinds of support and the facilities for their educational improvement. This itself is the strength of our college. 

Any valuable advice which you would like to give to the students to have a prosperous career ahead?

"Be consistent, dedicated and curious"

I would like to advise my students to manage their time effectively and work hard to achieve your goals. Never give up when you face any kind of failure. Follow your curiosity but be both open minded and sceptical.
