How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated?

The gaps are identified in the curriculum to effectively provide outcome-based education”

Jyothy Institute of Technology is affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, Karnataka and is accredited by AICTE. The curriculum is set by VTU whereas most of the employee-related rules and guidelines are defined by AICTE. The courses in the curriculum set by the university are designed using a scientific method to achieve all the Programme outcomes that linearly contribute to graduate attributes. Interdisciplinary courses are also offered so that the students can make explicit connections between disciplinary perspectives. Additional courses and extra-curriculum programs are designed by the Department to bridge the gaps effectively. The curriculum is updated once in 2 years by the university and the latest topics/extra-curricular activities are added to each course of the curriculum.

What are your views on the placements of the students of the department?

“Placement opportunities in the Core field are scarce in India”

  • There are very few core companies in India, hence getting a job is very tough. Companies like INTEL and Qualcomm are recruiting from Top IITs and NITs only.
  • As of now most of the students are placed in IT companies because of the Covid pandemic. If you have good communication skill and little basic knowledge of any programming language and computer engineering fundamentals, you will get a job in TCS, CTS, WIPRO, INFOSYS etc.
  • Core companies such as DXCORR, SANKALP semiconductor, Cypress Semiconductor etc. recruits B.Tech students from state-level govt engineering and top private college. Students must have crystal clear concepts in the subject like Analog, Digital, Device, Circuit theory.

Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students?

“Workshops, language classes and soft skill training”

The department has taken up several new activities such as Japanese language classes, FIT India Movement, Zumba, cycling, and marathon. Various soft skills programs including aptitude training and group discussions are carried out during semester holidays. As a part of co-curricular activities, the department has taken up activities such as Aeroclub, Robotics under e-Yantra, and SSA (Solar Student Ambassador) program and workshop under the IEEE student chapter.

How does the curriculum of your department ensure the best practice of the industry?

“The department establishes industry-institute interaction by arranging guest lectures and workshops”

To strengthen interaction with industries, the Department has entered into an agreement with Microsoft Company. Also, Industry experts are present on the Advisory Board of the department to assist in program design and course delivery. The students have to do mini projects, attend internships in industries and complete projects. There is a ‘Centre for Incubation, Innovation, Research and Consultancy’ (CIIRC) that houses various laboratories across different domains and hosts many eminent scientists.

How does the department enhance the skills of the faculty?

“The faculty are oriented towards Outcome-based Education (OBE) and trained via FDP’s”

The training and orientation Programmes are conducted by professional experts to master the skills of the faculty members in the nuances of teaching. Thus improving the efficiency of the teaching-learning process. The faculty attend Workshops, FDPs, national/international conferences to update their skills. They are encouraged to present/ publish their research work in national/international conferences or reputed journals. Faculty also take up advanced courses through NPTEL, Course era etc.

What do you see as the department’s greatest strengths?

“Qualified faculty and innovation centre enhance’s the student’s development in multi-disciplinary fields”

The department has a majority of Ph.D. degree holders who are highly experienced and dedicated in their respective domains. We also have an IEEE student chapter, which is highly active in organizing student workshops and societal services. e-Yantra is a project sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT). The Department of ECE has set up a robotics lab under the e-Yantra Lab Setup Initiative (eLSI) to impart training and education in the area of embedded systems and robotics with the IIT-Bombay initiative.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for a prosperous career ahead?

Cultivate perseverance, patience and be bold to speak up”

  • Students are advised to venture outside of their comfort zone and look for new opportunities.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students?

Department has made mandatory to conduct 2 hands-on workshops for students per semester”

  • The workshops are planned such that the students will get the skill sets required for the industry.
  • Bridge courses and extra tutorial classes are conducted for the slow learners so that there is improvement in the student's ability to understand and apply the knowledge gained.
  • The advanced learners are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as cultural and sports programs, technical events, NPTEL courses, etc.
