Dr. Anil B. is the Academic Director at Vidya Academy of Science and Technology. He was the former principal at the Government Engineering College Barton Hill, TVM. At Vidya Academy, Dr. Anil plans on providing the students with an industry-based input and inspiring them to keep learning at every step. 

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“A democratic and transformational approach towards leadership”

 My philosophy is to lead from the front, keep everyone informed and involve them in the decision-making process. Empower the subordinates to rise to higher levels and take up responsibility. The leadership style per se can be delegative and transformative.

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your Institute?

“Believing in action since the very beginning”

The action speaks for itself and will be the best marketing tool. We involve in community development activities and intervene with technical solutions, document all activities carried out inside and outside the institution, and rely on our website, newsletter, media (print and visual), and social media for dissemination. We also conduct orientation programs, science awareness programs, and orientation programs for school children to cultivate a passion for science and maths. As far as the administration is concerned, we follow a corporate culture. At the top level, the executive committee of the management who delegated short term plans to the directors. The day to day activities are taken care of by the principal, in consultation with the college council consisting of heads of department and heads of different functional units. 

Any insights into how your Institute could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

“Opening possibilities for students from different backgrounds”

Vidya is a socially committed institution. Our motto is "Progress through Education". We are providing scholarships to meritorious students hailing from economically weaker sections and this is one of the strengths of our institution.

What would you like people to know about your Institute that they may not know of?

“Making the students self-reliant and industry-ready”

The opportunities offered by the institution in the overall development of the student. In addition to the regular curriculum the students are exposed to the National Service Scheme to develop social commitment, EDC for entrepreneurship development, TBI for Business incubation, various clubs such as Yoga club, Nature club, Eco Club, etc. and Professional society activities. 

What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for the Vidya Academy of Science and Technology specifically?

“Ingraining the importance of learning new things throughout life”

The technology is changing at a very rapid pace, by the time a student graduates, whatever he has learned becomes obsolete. This is true with Computer Science and electronics and communication and related areas. In other conventional areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engg. etc. also new developments are happening at a rapid pace. Hence educational institutions must teach fundamentals and focus on how to learn new things. The challenge will be to create lifelong learners who can survive in the technologically intensive world.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“Sincerity and commitment in every aspect of life”

My suggestion to the aspiring youth firstly would be to study well. It is important to be aglint and adapt to changes. Failure is not the end of the world; it is the first step towards success.
