MSEC Celebrates Independence Day by Planting 40000 Tree Saplings in a Single day using Miyawaki Forestation

Date: August 16, 2021

In line with the sayingMepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi has taken a very good initiative and it will be creating MIYAWAKI FORESTATION for the THIRD TIME at its campus with the support extended by Alumni Association. They have already planted 11,530 trees on a single day thus becoming the FIRST ENGINEERING COLLEGE in our country to complete such a massive plantation drive during August 15, 2020 (Phase I). They have created such forestation by planting 6133 more trees under phase II on 06.11.2020. With the same enthusiasm, during August 14, 2021, the college has again created history by planting 40,000 trees in an area of 1 lakh square feet in a single day thus making this year’s Independence Day the most memorable one for all. The plantations include more than 150+ varieties of different useful spices and others.

As per the briefing by the college principal, Dr.S.Arivazhagan, the stimuli for exploring the possibility of creating this forestation has been put forth by the office bearers and members of the Alumni association three years ago. Finally, the dream has come true with the support and joint effort by all including chapters of the Alumni association, faculty, staff and students of our institute. On a happy note, he added that the goal is towards planting 1,00,000 trees on the campus and possibly this mission will be accomplished in phase IV which is expected soon.

He further said that the Miyawaki technique grows trees 10 times faster and denser. It is a unique technology proven worldwide irrespective of soil and climatic conditions. It is possible to have 300% more species in the same area as compared to conventional plantations. It has been established that this type of forestation absorbs 30% more carbon dioxide compared to a conventional plantation. Also, he said that the forestation in the campus will be completely chemical fertilizer-free that will be able to sustain itself and support local biodiversity.

He added that, for this massive plantation drive, M/s. ZF Wind Power Ltd., Coimbatore has come forward to donate more than 35,000 tree saplings again for this purpose, again thanks to the efforts of our Alumni team. The remaining tree saplings have been purchased and kept ready. Several trucks of free Municipal wastes have been transported from Sivakasi and Srivilliputhur Municipality regions.

Already the campus here is greener with more than 7000 well-grown trees of different varieties and a separate gardening team nourishes and looks after the trees. Again the addition of 11530 plantations in phase I and 6133 plantations in phase II has certainly made the campus more greener and conducive for better learning and comfortable campus living. Soon, aiming to reach one lakh tree saplings plantation mark within the campus. The stern effort put forth by the college has earned them “GREEN CAMPUS AWARD '' from the Tamil Nadu Pollution control board during the year 2019.

Principal emphasized the saying by Great Akira Miyawaki that, We can create many such mini Miyawaki forests in the city in almost all of the localities where there is even a little space. He informed that the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued a warning to global countries to take forward immediate steps to curtail emissions and promote eco-friendly initiatives. He added further that, this GREEN CAMPUS INITIATIVE by our College is one such initiative and he requested all organizations to create such forestations for the benefit of our society at large.
