In the middle of the ongoing dharna, the BHU administration decided on Thursday evening that the institutes, faculties, centres and hostels will be opened for the final year of graduation, postgraduate and research scholars shortly after the next semester review scheduled to begin on 5 January. Instructions and protocols of the Government to keep COVID-19 out of infection will be strictly followed.
This was given in writing by the university to students on the Dharna campus. BHU Public Relations Officer Dr Rajesh Singh said that the decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar and attended by directors of various BHU institutes, Deans of different faculties, Examination Controller, Chief Proctor Prof OP Rai and Registrar Dr Neeraj Tripathi.

Around a month ago, the university administration established committees to prepare a report on the opening of departments in their respective faculties, taking into account the current situation of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Each faculty was asked to propose a standard operating procedure for the monitoring of the spread of Covid-19. These committees submitted their report.
Singh said that the reports of the committees were discussed in a phased manner for the opening of the university. After extensive discussion of various aspects, it was decided that in accordance with the guidelines and standards issued by the Government of India for the prevention of Covid-19, various institutes, faculties, departments, centres and hostels will be opened for graduate students in the final year after the next semester examinations.

Singh said that it was also agreed at the meeting that the semester examinations beginning on 5 January 2021 would be conducted in an open book examination mode as per the previously announced academic calendar. As per the Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Government for the opening of faculties, departments, it will take time to prepare health related preparations, to clean the hostels and the library and to spray disinfectants. But the university will be completed in a minimum period of time.
Singh said that the schedule will be prepared by different faculties for starting classes, which will be uploaded to the university website. After the university is opened, students will have to follow the Covid-19 standards and students living in the hostels will have to submit a No Objection Certificate" certified by their parents. The format of this will also be uploaded to the university website.
Singh said that for the convenience of students, the Central Library would soon be opened in accordance with the Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Government of India, so that 300 students could study in two shifts (150 students per shift) in the Central Library every day. Information in this regard will soon be uploaded to the university website by the administration of the library.
