All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the leading regulatory body for technical education in India has announced a development scheme, AICTE-IDEA Labs for engineering students throughout the country.
AICTE has plans to launch AICTE- Labs in engineering colleges. The initiative is aimed at training engineering students to become imaginative and creative. Meanwhile, AICTE also collaborated with CareerLabs to launch NEAT 2.0 to help students build a profile for an apt professional career.
AICTE to Launch AICTE-IDEA Labs in Engineering Colleges
The idea behind AICTE IDEA labs to be set up in different institutes of the country is to promote creativity and new ideas that can provide meaningful and positive changes in society.
AICTE has selected 49 engineering institutes throughout the country that will be installed with IDEA labs. A large number of private institutions, more than 80%, have been selected for this purpose.
These labs will be built and developed in a phased manner as per the announcement. The first phase is set to include education institutes that are established in non-metro cities of 16 states and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Proposals for the schemes were invited in January of 2021 and were then evaluated by the National Steering Committee. The second phase of the scheme is planned to include metro cities.
The motivation behind IDEA labs is to provide students with knowledge that is beyond the textbook so that students can learn to become imaginative and produce creative ideas that can be then developed into meaningful inventions.
The approved institutions are given directions to organise training sessions for interested students and provide insights and support to the projects which are thus brought forward. The training material and sessions are currently being planned to be provided in an online format.
Rajive Kumar, AICTE secretary asserted, “There should be no lock put on IDEA Lab which should work on trust, allowing free access to facilities 24x7. The IDEA Labs in smaller cities will strengthen the innovation ecosystem of the country.”
“As a common facility embedded in the institution, the IDEA Lab will make engineering graduates more imaginative and creative, besides getting basic training in the 21st-century skills like- critical thinking, problem-solving, research, collaboration, communication, lifelong learning, etc,” an official statement reads.
The IDEA Lab also intends to encourage teachers to conduct “multidisciplinary education and research” emphasized in the National Education Policy, NEP 2020. About 80% of educational institutions selected by AICTE are private. According to Kumar, about 600 colleges had applied to set up the labs including government colleges. " The participation of government colleges was low and many such colleges were rejected as they did not meet the parameters set by AICTE," Kumar said.
