Dishi Mishra Posted On : July 15th, 2022
BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus

GATE consists mostly of numerical questions. It tests the aptitude for solving questions in less time. BITS HD papers have 10-15 numerical questions usually. The numerical questions aren’t on the same level as GATE and are just formula-based problems. Usually, around 80-90% of BITS HD questions are theory oriented. You need to have a good grasp of your engineering subjects to score well in BITS HD. The questions can come from anywhere in the syllabus. BITS HD usually consists -

  • 15 Mathematics questions (difficulty usually higher than GATE)
  • 15 general English questions
  • 70 Engineering discipline questions

Also, note that BITS take admission based on GATE scores as well.

What kind of difficulty can one expect for the BITS HD? Are there numerical questions involved? Should the candidates give importance to theory, or problems?

BITS HD isn’t too difficult. If you have prepared well for GATE, you can easily score well in BITS HD. The exam has numerical questions. But these are not too difficult in terms of calculation and are mostly theory-based.

BITS HD is conducted online, i.e. in CBT format. The test has two parts, i.e. Test 1 (30 questions, 45 mins) and Test 2 (70 questions, 105 mins). Students applying for ME Software Systems programs also need to take a special test for software systems.

Test 1 includes Core Mathematics, English, and Principal of Management questions. Compared to GATE, this section is a bit difficult. Test 2 includes core subject questions and the questions asked are pretty straightforward.

KS
Kinshuk Saha Posted On : January 14th, 2021
M.E in Microelectronics from BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus (2022)

BITS HD is all about how quickly students can solve conceptual questions. The syllabus is very similar to GATE. Discussed below are some tips which will be helpful for your preparation.

Preparation Tips:

  • You should not spend too much time on the problems you are not sure about. Instead, utilize the time on the questions you feel that you can do fast.
  • If you are an ECE student, make sure you have a clear concept about all the subjects.
  • Go through the previous year's questions of GATE.
  • You should not underestimate paper 1 as it is quite scoring. There is no necessity to prepare the EE part.
  • For paper one, do not leave any topic mentioned in the syllabus. Especially the surface integral, triple integral, and geometry of complex numbers prepare them very well.
  • For English, solving questions from slightly tough sources can be done because BITS HD is tougher than GATE.

If any question is wrong or incomplete, you should avoid attempting it.

How should one prepare for the BITS HD exam?

SM
Sagar Mahajan Posted On : January 8th, 2021
M.E Mechanical Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (2017)

BITS-HD provides prominence upon the questions related to theory. However, in GATE the emphasis is given to Numeric related questions.

Examination Pattern:

  • In 120 minutes, the students are given a total number of 100 questions to be solved.
  • The pattern of this exam is somewhat similar to the IES.
  • You should look through the previous year question papers of the IES paper thoroughly and do the same with the GATE papers.

Syllabus:

  • Focus more on clearing your concepts for important topics of Mechanics.
  • BITS-HD syllabus has more topics when compared to that of GATE. Prepare well for the whole syllabus.
  • The first paper covers Mathematics and English. Try to do well in the 1st paper. It is quite scoring and with sufficient preparation, you can even score the full marks. This will give you an edge over the others.

Try to score close to 190 to secure a seat in your preferred branch. Hope this was helpful.
