IIT edit Madras has 16 departments, 14 research centres, and a Continuing Education Programs Centre (CEP). All of the centres offer 121 courses in Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Management. IIT Madras has signed MOUs with a number of foreign universities for student exchange programs. As per the MoUs signed, students pursuing UG, PG, and Dual Degree programs at the institute spend a semester abroad for broad exposure. In addition, the institute also offers Joint Doctoral Programs (JDPs) in collaboration with 17 foreign universities. The institute also provides an AICTE-sponsored Quality Improvement Program (QIP).

Out of the 121 courses offered by IIT Madras, BTech and Online Degree program has the highest popularity. BTech is the flagship program of the institute. Admission to the course is done on the basis of rank obtained in the JEE Advanced exam. The minimum rank required for the IIT Madras BTech program is 85 to 4000. The annual fee for the BTech program is INR 2.05 Lacs. 

IIT Madras Online Degree is India's first online program in Data Science and Programming. Admission to the degree program is based on Qualifier exam score. The candidates appearing for the Qualifier exams are required to score aggregate 50% marks in the exam. The fees for the online degree program range from INR 50k to 1 Lac. IIT Madras Placements 2023 received 445 offers, including 407 PPOs. This placement drive was attended by 331 companies, who recruited for 722 job profiles. 

On the first day, 25 students received INR 1 CPA job offers, while 15 foreign offers were made by four companies. Microsoft, Graviton, Flipkart, Texas Instruments, Goldman Sachs, Qual comm, Boston Consulting Group, and Morgan Stanley were among the top recruiters at this year's IIT Madras Placement drive 2023.

To encourage meritorious students and help needy students with financial support, IIT Madras offers different types of scholarships and fee waivers. There are several schemes available for financial assistance by alumni, companies, Govt. of India, and institute at IITM. The following scholarships are famous among IITM students.

  • Institute Merit-cum-Means Scholarships: IITM offers up to 67% tuition fee exemption to only 25% of students admitted. Students whose annual parental income is less than INR 4.5 Lakhs are eligible to apply for MCM scholarships. Also, the subject of renewing this scholarship is a minimum GPA of 5.0 in the previous semester.
  • Institute Free Studentship: Likewise MCM scholarship, IIT Madras offers a free studentship for the students whose annual parental income is less than INR 4,50,000 lakhs. Students are exempted from the payment of 67% of the tuition fee under this scheme. However, the scholarship is only offered to 25% of the UG students.
  • Institute Notional Prize:  On the basis of the JEE rank and annual parental income not exceeding INR 4,50,000, IITM offers a one-time grant of INR 1000 to the 7% of the students admitted.
  • SC/ST Scholarship: IITM offers renewable institute SC/ST scholarship especially for the students belonging from SC/ST categories whose annual parental income doesn’t exceed INR 4,50,000. Students under this scheme are offered tuition fee exemption along with a free messing and monthly pocket allowance of INR 250
